Meatpacking District

Contrary to popular belief, there are still a couple of meatpackers left in this historic district, which retains much of its original character?cobblestone streets and mostly low, warehouse-style buildings?because it is protected after being granted landmark status. The Renzo Piano–designed Whitney Museum, located at the southernmost tip of the High Line, was a game changer for the waterfront, as was the opening of Hermès to the burgeoning retail scene. And being sandwiched between the West Village and Chelsea considerably broadens the dining options, whether a quick bite at Chelsea Market, a dry-aged porterhouse for two at Old Homestead Steakhouse, or a multicourse omakase menu at the New York outpost of Tokyo’s Okuda.
