Stony Brook

Historic Stony Brook has many 18th and 19th century homes, particularly north of Route 25A, and newer, more affordable homes to the south. Many residents work at Stony Brook University, whose sprawling campus, which includes a hospital, covers nearly 1,500 acres. In 1941, wealthy businessman Ward Melville created the Stony Brook Village Center, his vision of an idyllic New England-style village, with water views. Today, the quaint center includes shops and restaurants, such as Robinson's Tea Room, with British high tea service, and The Crushed Olive, with samples of oils and vinegars. Stony Brook's upscale restaurants include Mirabelle at the Three Village Inn and the Country House.
